Killing the parents, the psychological meaning of the heroes Oedipus and Orestes

, English translation at the end of the article

Killing the parents, the psychological meaning of the heroes Oedipus and Orestes, and their struggle with a terrible Father or mother

In myths, legends, and stories from different peoples, the parents are presented on the one hand as good characters, giving birth, nourishing, raising, and strengthening that must be respected, but on the other hand, are also portrayed as characters who must be freed in order to grow up and especially when they are very dominant or have a negative influence. The struggle is difficult and violent, especially in cases where they transmit to their children their complexes, imposing their personal needs at the expense of parenthood, or when the child grows up under their heavy shadow. What are the cases in which the problems of the parents become the heavy fate of the children against their will, a fate that a lifetime faces!
And what should they do in this unbearable ambivalence? Sometimes it is necessary to struggle, how did they get out of the tangle of the struggle?
We will refer here to the killing of parents also in the symbolic sense, Archetypal: to eliminate the parent, to remove from him the power of influence that hinders, uses, or possesses and even sometimes destructive to the development of the young self in particular, but also as an obstacle that hinders the boy or girl, the boy or girl from reaching independence, castrates doing and entering a life of work and relationships and also sometimes appears as a negative force that hinders too much to reach individuation and development Self, prevents the possibility of reaching a separate self that is the personal need that is, in both cases, we see parallel phenomena in Oedipus a repulsive father is threatened and wants to eliminate the son and in the story of Orestes an angry mother fights and tries to get rid of the son in order to take revenge on the father. And in both cases of both Oedipus and Orestes (as sometimes in cases of difficult divorce disputes even today) there is a second parent who uses the child by Killing the parents, the psychological significance of this act, and the use of the two myths about Oedipus and Orestes and what task lay in front of each other is the topic of this article.
This issue of the killing of parents by their children and the punishment for it has preoccupied humanity from the advance of its beginning, the stubborn intergenerational struggle appears in many myths in various legends and plays, what is the psychological significance of this painful and strange subject? And what is the relevance of all this to the modern psychology of our time beyond the complex about which Freud spoke and what are the possibilities of healing each of us?

The question that needs to be asked is whether this symbolic killing of a parent is a necessary developmental stage, whether everyone should "kill" the parent at some point or whether these are special cases in which the parents with their severe problems overshadow their children sense. very strongly, and these must fight them and even kill them in a mental That is, is the symbolic killing of importance for each one of us, that is, for each person by virtue of being a son or daughter of parents or does every person who must achieve independence and individuation must go through such a stage? For example, to free oneself from the natural idealization that exists in parent-child relationships in order to counteract an ideal influence of the parent that may reduce the size of the son or daughter? Or in order to lower the ideal or negative parental figure that reduces the size of the child's self?
It is a question for Analytical theory, does each psyche go through the Oedipal phase if we believe in Freud? and does each one has to go through a childish period in which he will have a wish to kill the father or the mother? Or can these myths indicate for us extreme, pathological cases in which parents harmed their children and took advantage of them or "settled", within their souls in an unsolvable way?
Erich Neumann in his book The History of the Development of Consciousness expands on the Freudian explanation of the urge to kill the father. According to Neumann, the killing of parents, even that of the mother is an essential need related to the liberation of the archetypical-imagined parent that exists in our psyche.
Archetypal means an a priori pattern, which has a bipolar power: a powerfully positive and negative that is naturally projected for a certain period of childhood on the personal parent. And one of the natural functions of the personal parent is to shape the child into a human figure and free it from the archetypal dimension. Following Neumann, it can be said, therefore, that when the parent, and especially the personal father, does not function as a father, or worse, takes advantage of the child's projection and admiration for his personal needs, consciously or unconsciously, the boy or girl must fight him. They must fight because in their souls the personal war remains in the form of this powerful or demonic parent who has not been humanized through their personal parent. And sometimes not only has not been humanized but from the behavior of the parent remains in their souls a demonic figure that must be disposed of.
And again, even after Neumann's more advanced explanation, it is difficult to avoid the question of whether in normal parenting relationships, in a modern society like ours, when it comes to parents who are good enough, it is necessary, there is relevance to such an extreme image of killing the parent and even as a symbolic act that expresses as a kind of developmental stage?
The answer could be that since the negative and positive bipolar archetypical pattern component is always present in the psyche, awareness of its negative side is especially important for understanding the structure of the psyche and the repertoire of situations that it entails. Such archetype images can always appear in the world of imagination, in fears, in dreams in creation and therefore must be understood and accepted. And more important to understand them for the extreme situations that are created in life, which can easily deteriorate and become fixed in a similar way to what appears in the myths.
The two Greek myths that bring up the subject of the killing of a parent in a way that is interesting to discuss, are the famous myth about Oedipus, the king who killed his father Leos and lived a couple of life with his mother Jocasta, many of whom dealt with psychoanalytic psychology and the second myth, the myth about Orestes of the House of Atreus, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, an orphan who lives with a distant and ideal father figure, kills his mother for having murdered the father, according to an order he receives from the gods.

Both Oedipus and Orestes are typical characters of a Greek mythological hero although their interest is explicitly in the conflict with one of the parental figures and not in the relationships with the Gods or Monsters. Both were born into a severe distress situation against the background of a problematic family with parents who are at odds with each other and have their own serious complexes.
The myth about Oedipus
The myth tells us the tragic story of a child born in a situation where Father Leos does not want a son and mother Jocasta craves him and does him by giving the father wine at night. The father tries to eliminate his son and we also understand what mental background the father is intimidated by the arrival of a son: he himself committed a serious offense from which he evaded in his youth: he is the one who seduced a teenage son of his friend, he kidnapped or fled with him, and the son of the friend finally committed suicide. The threatened father is deceived by his wife who wants to give birth to a baby and when Oedipus (wounded in the leg) is born, the father cannot bear his existence and tries to eliminate him with the help of a shepherd who has been bullied and handed over to another. Later, he arrives at the court of a king who has adopted and raised him until he discovers his secret about being adopted. After revealing his secret, he goes to consult with the oracle and is given the frightening prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother.

The father's compulsive appeal to the oracle and the request for advice and the acceptance of prophecies, shows us, of course, that the father is anxious and worried about punishment, and it is better for him not to have a son at all! Threat Of the father, then, it is central to the desire to eliminate the son and the expulsion from the father's house. Perhaps another better father symbolizes the fact that it was not the father himself who raised him but another good father.
. It should be mentioned that Freud, who dealt a lot with the myth of Oedipus, did not at all refer to some things that directly belonged to the facts of Oedipus's life from within the myth. First, he ignored the fact that Laius, the father of Oedipus, comes to his forced paternity with a serious unsolved problem and he is the father, he is the one who wants to eliminate his son in the first place and not the son's wish is primary. Likewise, Freud does not refer to the fact that the mother, Jocasta, the wife of Laius, creates her son Oedipus stealthily, without the father's awareness and consent! In fact, she creates the child for herself, her son, while watering his father with wine and creating the child while the father sleeps! And it is therefore clear that from the very beginning the mother is attached to her son in a secret and special relationship that may turn into incest! We see two problems that fall predestined on the back of little Oedipus before his birth and make us realize that his "oedipally" has its origin in both a father and a mother's problem in the first place! Each of the parents adds his part to the problem of the son, complexes that will have to be solved later.

The problem of the son, therefore, does not arise only from his masculine, masculine nature, that is, the young male who seeks his preference over the adult in the herd in order to reach the females as in the Freudian Herd theory. But the emotional complication here stems from a forced parental mental problem, which was put on the back of a child, who carries the parent's Archetype and complexes, against his will.
Also, in the story of Orestes, the young prince of the house of Atreus is seen as a child who is attacked in advance by the problems of his parents
The myth about Orestes
The father of the protagonist Orestes (the man from the mountains), Agamemnon, deals with his great wars when he comes to the aid of his brother in the Trojan War that developed against the background of the kidnapping of the beautiful Helena his sister-in-law. The father deals with wars in which many victims such as, among other things, his daughter Iphigenia who is sacrificed to the goddess Artemis as the defender of the heart of the mother Clytemnestra. But even worse, the mother, Orestes's mother, Clytemnestra, who bears the prolonged harm from the father and in general, is also preoccupied with the wars against the father and the takeover of his kingdom with betrayal with Agitos, the rejection of the daughter Electra the sister and her expulsion from the palace and wars of revenge that is waged on the backs of her children. Also, the son Orestes she sends from the house and is deprived of his rights.
Orestes dreams a formative dream in which Apollo appears as the ideal Greek father god and commands him to avenge his father's revenge, that is, to kill his mother after she betrayed his father and murdered him even though the father also did deeds. Together, the brother and sister commit the murder and stay close to each other. Later, Orestes also releases his sister Iphigenia, who turns out to have become the priestess of Artemis after she was sacrificed to her but saved by her.
Here, of course, there is also the context of sacred patriarchalism and the struggle against matriarchs, but we will refer to the personal aspect of a boy child, whose father was eliminated by the mother and who must stand as a gladiator fighting the war of the unrepresented father. Orestes must do this first, in order to restore the damaged masculinity that is annihilated by the neutered mother in the home of the Atreus family. Some of the moves he must take is the elimination of the mother, which he carries out with the help of his sister Electra, who will later help him in his own rehabilitation. And rehabilitation of the sick kingdom.
About the two heroes Oedipus and Orestes each from his own narrative, to kill the image of the neutering parent who puts the burden and fixates the self from developing.
Oedipus kills the repulsive and annihilating father, who tries to drive him out of his way. It is interesting in the story of Oedipus, after hearing rumors that he is adopted and goes to consult with Oracle and hears from him about his fate that should not be avoided. Following the prophecy, Oedipus decides to leave home as an escape from his fate out of the love of his adopting parents like any child who tries to love his parents even in difficult situations.
But on the way to escape from his adoptive home, he encounters his real father, King Lios, without knowing him, and a fight develops between them. The father, King Leos, shouts and pounces, forcing Oedipus to clear the way, but runs with the car over his leg, which injures the wound of the past. At this crossroads in which the two are provoked, Oedipus kills the father unaware that he is his father. On his way, he hears about the fate of the city of Tabai and about the Sphinx monster that swallows boys and girls. The fate of the city depends on the hero who will be able to answer the riddle of the Sphinx. What goes first on four then on two and then on three legs. Oedipus with the injured leg answers the riddle "This is the man" and liberates the city. He accepts the queen and his mother as a woman and lives with her for about twenty years. After twenty years, an epidemic breaks out that forces Oedipus to begin investigating the disappearance of the previous king who was murdered. Father. He insists on knowing and the prophet Tiresias helps him uncover the truth. All the details of the story of the murder of the father, the liberation of the kingdom and its restoration, the marriage to the mother, and the life of incest are not aware Oedipus and we understand that what experiences are repressed that do not prevent the young Oedipus from starting a family and a kingdom
In the not-so-deep sense of the solution, Oedipus killed the Father in order to be strong enough to establish and reign in a kingdom. He overcame the predatory father but did not take any responsibility or awareness for it and did not pay any price! Murder and incest are done unconsciously and perhaps for a young person, it is better not to have too much awareness of his actions and not guilt at a stage when the mind is not able to withstand it
.

the need for mental closeness .they arouse in him the admiration and inseparability .in today's words we would say use him for their own needs without any vision of his own needs: in Oedipus the character who is too "good" and who exploits the child for her own needs, She is Jocasta, the mother, and for Oreste, the character who remains revered but too distant and remains an archetypal pattern, is Father Agamemnon, whose abandoned son Orestes remains faithful to him at all costs and even takes his revenge on the mother with the help of his sister Electra.
With all the bluntness of this mythology, it seems that it is possible to use these ancient myths to describe and understand the development of the human psyche and personality in general, especially through these complicated parental relationships and the way of the protagonist recovers from them. Inability to build for the child a human parent and not leave him with the Archetypal demonic or Ideal One.
Likewise, we can of course refer to them as extreme, pathological situations, from which we can learn about extreme cases where it is essentially necessary to kill the parent in order to survive. Or alternatively, sometimes it is necessary to forcibly get out of fixing and stuck incest link that sometimes has no regulation
.
The tragedy of Oedipus certainly brings us an extreme human condition, one of those situations that we sometimes see, a father rejecting, a castration that cannot give any place to a boy or girl and sabotages their psyche in an extreme way and the only way to get out is through murder, detachment, cancellation of distancing or conviction and more. Or alternatively, if an abuser is holding power and neutering. From the power of the myths, we learn that the human psyche advances DNA, and had to often deals with the killing of the father and the exit of incest (mental or real incest) with the mother. And what can we learn from these mythological cases regarding internal mental coping, and what psychological transformation processes can be undergone in such cases.
What does the myth show us about the mental problem faced by the heroes and what helps them, who, and what are the positive forces that remain for the heroes even in such tragedies?
We will recall that the myths about Oedipus and Orestes were born in a later period from the myths of the heroes of the sun such as Hercules Perseus and Theseus
In this type of advanced myth, the protagonist does not have a father of heaven, there is no direct godfather who takes care of him and accompanies him in his life as a father figure. Although the gods are there, and it is always possible to pray and ask and Orestes on the one hand did use Apollo and Aten as defenders in the trial he would have after the murder of his mother. But to rehabilitate his life, his psych he is helped by his sisters and by Artemis the Nature goddess in order to rehabilitate the mother side and feminine side in his kingdom!

And therefore, the myths also reveal to us the emotional-mental state of the protagonist and hint to us what emotions he will have to process.
Oedipus has the image of the good king, the adoptive father, who complements Oedipus the good father figure in which he does not want to harm after hearing his fate therefore after receiving the terrible prophecy, there is a split in the characters and the killing is directed in this myth to the evil, abusive and self-centered father figure. Liàos is a bad father or the father who does not know what attitude is, he does not raise the child personally. And the intensity of his negative paternity for Oedipus he receives from a murderous demonic figure inhuman and not present. (A mental health problem that can develop when the father himself suffered a lack of a personal father and lived with an Archetypal Demonic Father.).
Oedipus, then, deals here with the need to overcome a father who is not a father of flesh and blood and remains with a father figure on an archetypical-too ideal or demonic level, because he does not have a human personal father figure mediated between the archetypal level and the personal father. Ostensibly, he has grown normally and will be able to function as a king with a partially normal ego up to a certain point, mid-life, but at the cost of repression, hiding and lack of self-awareness, and certainly will not be able to easily withstand the process of individuation. He will also have to deal with the difficult incest work.

In contrast to Oedipus and his war against the father, Orestes admires his father, he stands by him, misses him, and compensates himself in the form of a grandfather and a brave friendship with his friend Pilates. Orestes' admiration for his brave warrior father, distant and lacking, creates in his weakness and a violation of the masculinity expected of a boy, a Greek prince!!
Although Oedipus managed to solve the riddle of the Sphinx with the help of their intellect, logic and self-confident self, and overconfidence, he also managed not to give an account of what he was doing at this young stage, not for the inevitable killing of the with the mother. The payment will come later when he is a person in the middle of his life! So, in order to continue the path, he will have to be held accountable and get to know his story in depth
In contrast to Oedipus, the murder perpetrated by Orestes with the help of his sister is a more conscious murder. Orestes commands murder, avenges, and frees the kingdom from a belligerent and destructive mother.
He will not be able to enter sufficient masculinity without the elimination of the external and internal dominant mother that hinders him from being and feeling like a man. This is one of those difficult and disturbed mothers who have no choice but to eliminate them completely. And the sister, in this case, Electra, the alternative female part to the mother, also helps him in the murder.
The killing of parents turns out to be primarily the killing of a mother, even if it is a mental symbolic killing of the abolition of detachment and distancing, which demands an unbearable mental toll. Archaic feelings of guilt
appear represented by the Erinyes Furies and the persecutory goddesses of revenge, a deep and painful feeling of amputation, the dismemberment of something that was part of you. develop in the murderer's son" fears of punishment and even psychotic feelings of persecution. Orestes endures terrible suffering in enormous conflicts and a colossal internal trial in which all the basic components of personality and psyche participate. In the myth, the clinical picture is described as "bouts of paranoia and takeover by the persecutory Erinyes from which Orestes is unable to free himself. Only a renewed appeal to the gods and the trial for which the male-feminine goddess triumphs, limits the period of adversity to one year and after that frees Oreste's es from his suffering.
On the other hand, Oedipus, who committed the murder alone, and whose resurrection depends only on himself! Oedipus uses his daughters Antigone and Isemania to rehabilitate him, and even with their help, it is not clear that he manages to do so. Orestes, on the other hand, is assisted by his sisters, his best friend, and the gods themselves, who conduct a trial and therefore also better withstand the consequences.
Oedipus has to deal with another fact of mental life, and this is an incest fact with the mother, that even from this sin or from such a state of mind should be released. On the other hand, Orestes, whose relationship with his mother is extremely negative and whose place of incest is replaced by rage must get rid of the terrible rage he has towards the mother's figure.

What does incest mean to the mother figure and what does rage mean towards the mother when we talk about life and attitude towards life and what are the elements that can cure incest, rage, and get out of being?
Orestes treats and heals the wound created in him as a result of the maternal and feminine elimination with the help of his sisters and especially Iphigenia and her goddess Artemis! Restoration of the kingdom by reconnecting Artemis with anime for women and nature. Oedipus does not treat the murder of the father to some extent through the relationship with Theresia the healing prophet, who acts as a therapist who helps him go through a process. Teresia's a wise old man, as a masculine and feminine uniter who helps Oedipus with his story… Perhaps as a therapist, the mental health doctor.
The myths that are saturated with impulses of rage and Erinyes show us symbolically the murder as an expression of rage and the instinct that symbolizes by an unprocessed and undeveloped Erinyes. Both rage and incest are two impulses or situations that express something non-exempt and extreme sometimes childish or even infancy. something that remains "stuck" in the psyche in its unprocessed form that we will call it in our languages pathological.
. In the story of Oedipus, the rage towards the repulsive father, who throws him away from the house and the one who is unable to accept his son and raise him, and in the story of Orestes, the rage against the mother who eliminated the father the masculinity and threw her son out of the house and at her son who must bear the terrible rage.

Does the myth conjure up parents' characters with whom there is no ability to reach processing and integration but to destroy them mentally? That is, are there parents from whom the only way to free themselves is to kill them? Is there no possibility of processing reconciliation and reasonable integration??
This is where the idea comes in quite clearly that there are families and mental situations in which there is no ability to process a relationship and reach a resolution of the struggle. The only way is symbolic killing (sometimes with concrete realistic consequences for the problematic parent), total liberation, and inner work that involves processing and accepting the murder with the mental tools that the son and ..daughter have.
A murder that must then be processed for years!!
